After completing a Ph.D. (on molecular mechanisms for protective roles of certain antioxidants against DNA changes that can lead to cancer), I did a post doctoral fellowship in a pathology research lab, followed by a senior research fellowship in chemistry and biochemistry, during which time I worked with a team affiliated with The Dow Chemical company in the development of an early cancer detection molecule. Dow's strategies for protecting and leveraging knowledge fueled my interest in the law. During law school I interned at Texas Tech University and Health Sciences Center Technology Transfer Office (working on licensing), clerked in the appellate division of the District Attorney's office, competed in a national level moot court competition, clerked with a boutique intellectual property office, worked as staff on a law school journal, and served as a research assistant to one of my law professors (drafting a national water law whitepaper).
Over the years I served as president and co-founder of a wellness corporation, co-founder of a food co-operative, and creator of several race events. For eleven years I managed a large international sporting event in Toronto. I enjoyed negotiating contracts, organizing the volunteers and media professionals and creating a super event for the athletes.
Community activities have included serving on boards of directors including Ontario's sport governing body for road racing, service with the Hurricane Katrina Legal Clinic, eight seasons of soccer coaching, leadership within the Odyssey of the Mind, and Forensics programs for elementary school students, leading Junior Great Books programs as noon-hour enrichment for fourth grade students, YMCA and YWCA capital campaigns, and the directorship of many road races, track meets and cross country running events.
I have enjoyed fellowship, adventure and competition with members of the Alpine Club of Canada, York U Track Club, West Texas Running Club, Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, South American Explorers Club, Colorado Mountain Club, and NWMC/R2AK. It's ancient history now but at one time I ran competitively enough to win the 1987 Canadian Marathon Championship.
An abiding gratitude for those who caused my progress in various pursuits through their example, good company, competition, encouragement - or even perhaps their doubts - powers my enthusiasm for helping others.
